Skin Cysts

Skin cysts are not cancerous, but they’re really uncomfortable and may become swollen, red, and tender to the touch. There are multiple skin cyst types, including sebaceous cysts, epidermoid cysts, and pilonidal cysts. By definition, a cyst is a closed structure on the skin that contains a fluid or semisolid substance.
Sebaceous cysts are swollen areas that appear when a sebaceous gland is blocked and the sebum gathers up under the skin. This cyst often appears on your upper chest, back, or face.
Epidermoid cysts, on the other hand, appear when the dead skin cells go deeper under the skin instead of falling off. The cells form a cyst and will ooze keratin that pools up in the center of the cyst.
Pilonidal cysts are always located near the tailbone and are most common in people who sit for prolonged periods of time. It appears when hair follicles become embedded in the skin, creating a pocket that contains both the hair follicle and the skin.
